E-mobility: Affordable EV charging powered by smart material solutions

To drive the future of e-mobility in France, La Borne Tricolore, a provider of EV charging solutions, set out with a clear goal: to develop a robust, affordable charging station with 80% of its components manufactured locally. Working alongside HYBSTER, an expert in product design and manufacturing, ALBIS France joined the project to provide plastics capable of meeting a demanding set of requirements:

Our support

Teaming up with La Borne Tricolore and HYBSTER early in the project, ALBIS France was able to offer valuable input on material options and component feasibility. The long-term partnership between ALBIS and HYBSTER ensured seamless collaboration and a shared focus on innovation and customer service. With strict criteria to meet, they specifically relied on ALBIS as a multi-material solutions provider with deep technical expertise. The distributor supported the project from design optimization and material selection to injection trials and technical analyses.

The material solutions

In total, five materials from the ALBIS portfolio were identified for different parts of the application, including brands from partners BASF, COVESTRO, INEOS Styrolution and MOCOM:

Makrolon^®: a transparent, V-0 flame-retardant polycarbonate used in the light guide face of the wallbox, together with a special light-diffusing PC masterbatch Alperform® LD from MOCOM.
Ultramid^®: an improved V-0 flame-retardant polyamide, reinforced with glass fiber, designed to support electrical connections as well as structural frames by providing excellent electrical properties and outstanding mechanical strength.
Luran^® SKR: an ASA+PC blend with V-0 flame-retardancy, high-impact strength and long-term UV resistance, compounded in tailored colors for the wallbox cover.
Luran^® S: a specialized ASA plastic used in selected components to meet specific requirements like easy processability, extreme weather resistance, durability and high toughness.

The result

The final product is a user-friendly wallbox that makes EV charging accessible to everyone – compatible with solar energy installations and connected to mobile devices through a smart interface. With 80% of the components made in France, the project also reflects the strong commitment of La Borne Tricolore to local and responsible production. The strategic partnership between HYBSTER and ALBIS played a decisive role in developing a charging station that is easy to install, crafted locally from premium materials, and offered at a competitive price.
